Space heaters are a legitimate tool for warming one room for a short time. They are not a fix for a heating system that cannot keep up, and used that way they are both expensive and dangerous. Portable heating equipment is a leading cause of home heating fires in the United States, and the electricity to run one continuously costs far more per unit of heat than natural gas.
